Saint Croix is a very popular Caribbean vacations destination, but do you even know where it is located? Is it a city in Bermuda? Is it a small island off Jamaica? Is it in Central, South, or North America? Hmm…?
Well, Apple Specials is here to set the record straight. St. Croix is the largest island in United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory belonging to the United States, like Puerto Rico, located in the Caribbean Sea. It was sold by Denmark to the United States in 1916 for $25,000,000 in gold. The agricultural aspect of the island largely died out in the 1970s and was replaced by tourism as the main source of income.
The highest point on St. Croix is Mount Eagle, at 1,165 feet high. It has a population of 50, 601 according to the 2010 US Census. English is the most common language, although Spanish, French creole, and Crucian are also spoken.
One of the most popular events is the Crucian Christmas Festival from late December through early January. The island celebrates numerous lavish festivals and parades throughout the year.
Buck Island Reef National Monument is a preserve and tourist destination for snorkeling. There is an underwater trail marked on the eastern tip of Buck Island, so that it is easy to follow. The Nationally protected trail uses plaques denoting particular species of flora and fauna in the area. There are more than 250 species of fish along with nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, Whitetip reef sharks, and leatherback turtles.
